G.I. Joe Chameleon (1984)
Overview
The Chameleon Swamp Skier was released in 1984 as part of the classic G.I. Joe “A Real American Hero” series by Hasbro. It was packaged together with the iconic Cobra master of disguise Zartan.
Designed as a stealth swamp vehicle, the Chameleon had a unique breakdown-and-hide feature that matched Zartan’s undercover personality. Unlike larger military-style vehicles from the same era, the Chameleon felt mysterious, unconventional, and almost post-apocalyptic — which helped it stand out in the 1984 lineup.
Key Features
1. Compact Swamp Vehicle
The Chameleon was a lightweight “swamp skier” built for marshes and shallow water terrain rather than direct combat.
2. Disguise & Stealth Theme
The vehicle could be partially disassembled and stored inside a crate-like shell, reinforcing Zartan’s disguise gimmick. Fans often interpreted this as Cobra camouflage gear.
3. Included With Zartan
The set came bundled with the original 1984 Zartan figure, one of the most beloved Cobra characters ever produced.
4. UV Color-Change Technology
Zartan himself featured UV-reactive plastic that changed color in sunlight — one of the coolest action figure gimmicks of the 1980s.
5. Highly Playable Design
The Chameleon featured:
-
Rotating fan propulsion
-
Weapon mounts
-
Storage sections
-
Modular parts
Its unusual design made it feel very different from tanks or jets in the line.

Why Collectors Love It
The Chameleon is remembered less as a military vehicle and more as a character piece for Zartan. Its bizarre swamp-tech aesthetic, disguise concept, and connection to one of Cobra’s coolest villains made it one of the most unique releases of the vintage 1980s G.I. Joe era.
