G.I. Joe V.A.M.P. Mark II (1984)
Overview
The G.I. Joe V.A.M.P. Mark II was released in 1984 as part of Hasbro’s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line.
“V.A.M.P.” stands for Vehicle: Attack/Multi-Purpose, and the Mark II version was an upgraded evolution of the original 1982 V.A.M.P. jeep. The vehicle came packaged with a tan repaint of Clutch, one of the original G.I. Joe drivers.
The VAMP Mark II became one of the defining Joe ground vehicles of the 1980s because it combined:
-
realistic military styling
-
modular weapons
-
troop transport capability
-
rugged off-road design
Many collectors consider it one of the best small-to-medium Joe vehicles ever made.
Key Features
1. Upgraded Missile Launcher
The original V.A.M.P.’s twin machine gun was replaced with a rotating quad missile launcher armed with removable Stinger XK2 missiles.
This made the Mark II feel heavier and more combat-ready than the 1982 version.
2. Armored Roof & Doors
One of the biggest visual upgrades:
the Mark II included removable armored side doors and a hardtop roof section.
This gave the vehicle:
-
better battlefield appearance
-
desert warfare aesthetics
-
increased realism
3. Desert Combat Color Scheme
The brown/tan camouflage made the VAMP Mark II stand out from the original green V.A.M.P. and fit perfectly into desert operations.
4. Included Tan Clutch Figure
The vehicle came with a tan version of Clutch, redesigned to match the desert attack theme.
Collectors often call this version “Tan Clutch.”
5. Excellent Playability
The VAMP Mark II featured:
-
rolling wheels
-
removable missiles
-
opening crew areas
-
tow capability
-
multiple seating positions
It worked perfectly alongside:
-
HAL artillery
-
MOBAT tank
-
Sky Hawk
-
Slugger

Why Collectors Love It
The VAMP Mark II perfectly represents the classic early G.I. Joe formula:
-
believable military hardware
-
durable engineering

modular accessories

endless play possibilities
It was rugged enough to feel realistic, but still had the exciting toy-like personality that made 1980s G.I. Joe legendary.
For many collectors, the VAMP Mark II is one of the definitive Joe vehicles of the vintage era — practical, iconic, and timeless
