Cobra Stellar Stiletto (1988)

Overview

The Cobra Stellar Stiletto was released in 1988 as one of Cobra's most futuristic vehicles in the vintage G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line. Designed as a high-speed space fighter, the Stellar Stiletto was capable of travelling into and out of Earth's atmosphere and was Cobra's direct answer to the G.I. Joe Defiant Space Vehicle.

The vehicle included the exclusive pilot Star-Viper and was also available in 1989 before being discontinued in 1990.

Key Features

Space Combat Fighter

The Stellar Stiletto was designed for high-speed combat in both the upper atmosphere and outer space. Its futuristic design made it one of Cobra's most unusual aircraft of the 1980s.

Pivoting Tail System

One of the vehicle's most distinctive features is its movable tail section. The tail can pivot, allowing the Stiletto to simulate a VTOL-style take-off and landing position.

Opening Cockpit

The vehicle features an opening shell-style cockpit canopy designed for its pilot, Star-Viper.

Four Removable Missiles

The Stellar Stiletto comes equipped with:

  • 2 large deep-space missiles

  • 2 smaller missiles

  • Positionable laser/plasma guns

The four removable missiles are important accessories when determining whether a loose example is complete.

Dual Stellar Engines

The spacecraft features two large propulsion engines, giving it its distinctive rear design and supporting its fictional high-speed space-combat role.

Includes Star-Viper

The Stellar Stiletto originally included Star-Viper, Cobra's specialist space pilot. Star-Viper is an important part of a fully complete original set.

Fun Facts

Cobra's Space Fighter

The Stellar Stiletto was released during the same period as the massive G.I. Joe Defiant Space Complex, giving Cobra its own dedicated space-combat vehicle.

Extremely Futuristic for 1988

The vehicle represents the increasingly futuristic direction of the G.I. Joe line during the late 1980s, combining science-fiction styling with Cobra's classic military themes.

Reused in 1993

The Stellar Stiletto mold was later reused for the 1993 G.I. Joe Star Brigade Starfighter, which came packaged with Sci-Fi.

No Major Vintage Variations

Collector references generally list the 1988 and 1989 releases without major vehicle variations.

A Unique Cobra Aircraft

Unlike traditional Cobra aircraft such as the Rattler, Night Raven or Mamba, the Stellar Stiletto was specifically designed for operations beyond Earth's atmosphere.
