G.I. Joe S.H.A.R.C. (1984)

Overview

The G.I. Joe S.H.A.R.C. was released in 1984 as part of Hasbro’s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line.

“S.H.A.R.C.” stands for Submersible High-Speed Attack and Reconnaissance Craft, a compact underwater assault vehicle designed for deep-sea missions, reconnaissance, and anti-Cobra naval operations. It was packaged with the diver character Deep Six. (gijoe.fandom.com)

The SHARC became one of the most recognizable Joe aquatic vehicles of the 1980s because of its sleek shark-inspired design, rotating fins, and futuristic submarine look. Many collectors still consider it one of the coolest underwater vehicles in the vintage line.

Key Features

1. Shark-Inspired Design

The SHARC featured:

  • a pointed shark-like nose

  • side fins

  • hydrodynamic body shape

  • aggressive underwater styling

Its design immediately stood out from standard military submarines.

2. Rotating Side Fins

The movable fins allowed kids to simulate:

  • underwater maneuvering

  • attack mode

  • high-speed turns

This gave the vehicle extra play value.

3. Included Deep Six Figure

The SHARC came with Deep Six, one of the original G.I. Joe naval specialists and a fan-favorite deep-sea diver.

4. Cockpit Canopy

The opening cockpit canopy allowed Deep Six to sit inside the vehicle while piloting underwater missions.

5. Attack Weapons

The SHARC included:

  • side-mounted missiles

  • torpedo launchers

  • rotating weapon systems

Despite its compact size, it looked heavily armed.

Fun Facts

One of the Most Futuristic 1984 Joe Vehicles

While many early Joe vehicles were grounded in realism, the SHARC leaned heavily into sci-fi naval design — which helped make it memorable.

Deep Six Was Hard to Fit in Other Vehicles

The original 1984 Deep Six figure had a bulky diving suit that limited articulation, making the SHARC almost the only vehicle he could comfortably pilot.

Collectors often joke:

“Deep Six basically lived inside the SHARC.”

Inspired by Shark Imagery

The name, shape, and aggressive nose section clearly referenced sharks, fitting the underwater combat theme perfectly.

Popular in Bathtub & Pool Play

Many fans specifically remember using the SHARC in:

  • bathtubs

  • swimming pools

  • outdoor water battles

Its streamlined shape made it especially fun in real water.

Early Joe Water Vehicles Became Legendary

The SHARC helped establish G.I. Joe’s strong naval sub-theme alongside:

  • the Killer W.H.A.L.E.

  • Cobra Water Moccasin

  • Devilfish

  • Hydrofoil

Why Collectors Love It

The SHARC perfectly captured the adventurous spirit of early G.I. Joe. It looked futuristic without becoming ridiculous, and it delivered exactly what kids wanted:

  • underwater combat

  • shark aesthetics

  • missile attacks

  • high-speed aquatic missions

For many collectors, the SHARC remains one of the definitive naval vehicles of the vintage G.I. Joe era — sleek, imaginative, and unmistakably 1984.
