G.I. Joe Cobra Rattler (1984)

Overview

The Cobra Rattler was released in 1984 as part of Hasbro’s legendary G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line. It quickly became one of the most iconic Cobra vehicles ever produced.

The Rattler was designed as a ground attack jet for the Cobra Air Force and included the pilot figure Wild Weasel. Its design was heavily inspired by the real-world A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog”, but stylized with Cobra’s futuristic aesthetics and VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) technology.

Many fans consider the Rattler the Cobra equivalent of the Skystriker — a flagship aircraft that defined Cobra’s air power during the 1980s.

Key Features

1. VTOL Wing System

The Rattler featured rotating engine pods that allowed it to switch between:

  • flight mode

  • hover mode

  • vertical landing mode

This VTOL gimmick became one of the toy’s most memorable features.

2. Massive Weapon Loadout

The jet included:

  • bombs

  • missiles

  • rear gun turret

  • nose-mounted cannon

It looked heavily armed and intimidating compared to most G.I. Joe aircraft.

3. Included Wild Weasel Figure

The Rattler came packaged with Wild Weasel, Cobra’s ace pilot and one of the best-designed Cobra figures of the era.

4. Battle Damage Panels

Some removable side panels exposed internal engine detail and simulated combat damage — a rare premium feature for 1984 toys.

5. Highly Detailed Sculpt

Collectors still praise the Rattler for its mechanical detailing, rotating turbines, and realistic military-inspired appearance.

Fun Facts

Inspired by the A-10 Warthog

The Rattler strongly resembles the real-world Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, especially with:

  • twin engines

  • anti-armor role

  • heavy front cannon

  • rugged airframe

Fans often describe it as Cobra’s “evil Warthog.”

One of Cobra’s Most Loved Vehicles

A recent Reddit fan called it:

“My all-time favorite vehicle — Joe or Cobra.”

Another collector wrote:

“One of the coolest vehicles in the armada.”

The Prototype Name Was “Tanksmasher”

Early development references reportedly used the codename Tanksmasher, reflecting the aircraft’s anti-armor role.

Fragile Landing Gear

One of the few weaknesses:
the landing gear is notorious for breaking if handled roughly. Modern collectors inspect this area carefully before buying.

Reused as the Tiger Rat

The original mold later returned in 1988 as the Tiger Rat for the Tiger Force sub-line.

Why Collectors Love It

The Cobra Rattler perfectly captured the fantasy of Cobra as a true military superpower. It looked realistic enough to feel believable, but futuristic enough to feel dangerous and unmistakably Cobra.

For many collectors, the Rattler is one of the greatest G.I. Joe vehicles ever made — combining:

  • realism

  • playability

  • iconic design

  • heavy firepower

  • memorable engineering

It remains one of the crown jewels of vintage 1980s Cobra collections.
