G.I. Joe Cobra Mamba (1987)

Overview

The Cobra Mamba was released in 1987 as part of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and came packaged with the exclusive Gyro-Viper pilot. Designed as Cobra’s premier attack helicopter, the Mamba features a futuristic twin-boom configuration, a heavily armed weapons loadout, and seating for multiple Cobra troops. It is widely regarded as one of the best helicopter designs in the vintage G.I. Joe line.

With its distinctive silhouette and imposing size, the Mamba remains one of the most sought-after Cobra aircraft among collectors.

Key Features

1. Includes Gyro-Viper

Every original Mamba came with the exclusive Gyro-Viper, Cobra’s specialized helicopter pilot.

The Gyro-Viper was introduced specifically to operate the Mamba and was not available separately in 1987.

2. Unique Twin-Boom Helicopter Design

Unlike conventional helicopters, the Mamba features a striking twin-boom layout with a central cockpit and elevated rotor assembly.

Its futuristic styling makes it instantly recognizable and one of Cobra’s most visually distinctive aircraft.

3. Heavy Weapons Loadout

According to its official specifications, the Mamba is equipped with:

  • four 9 mm rapid-fire machine guns

  • two laser-guided anti-tank missiles

  • five supersonic air-to-air missiles

This gives it impressive firepower against both ground and aerial targets.

4. Multi-Figure Capacity

Besides the pilot, the Mamba includes side-mounted standing platforms where additional Cobra figures can ride into battle.

Collectors often display it with:

  • Vipers

  • Techno-Vipers

  • Cobra Officers

  • Crimson Guards

5. Large Rotor and Landing Gear

The helicopter features:

  • a massive main rotor

  • retractable-style landing skids

  • rotating weapons

  • spacious cockpit

These elements combine to provide excellent playability and display presence.

Fun Facts

One of Cobra’s Most Popular Aircraft

The Mamba is frequently ranked alongside the Night Raven and Firebat as one of the greatest Cobra aircraft ever produced.

Many fans consider it the definitive Cobra helicopter.

Gyro-Viper Was Exclusive

For many years, the only way to obtain a Gyro-Viper was by purchasing the Mamba, making complete sets especially desirable to collectors.

Surprisingly Realistic Performance

Its official file card lists:

  • Top speed: 210 mph (338 km/h)

  • Range: 450 miles (724 km)

While futuristic in appearance, these specifications are comparable to some real military helicopters.

Popular in Dioramas

The side platforms allow multiple Cobra troops to be displayed simultaneously, making the Mamba a favorite centerpiece in large-scale battle scenes.

A Highlight of the 1987 Lineup

Despite 1987 introducing several unconventional vehicle concepts, the Mamba is consistently praised by collectors as one of the year’s strongest releases.

Value Drivers

The biggest factors affecting collector value are:

  • inclusion of the original Gyro-Viper figure

  • intact main rotor and rotor hub

  • complete missile complement

  • undamaged side troop platforms

  • original decals in excellent condition

  • instruction sheet and original box

  • minimal discoloration or stress marks

Because the rotor assembly and side-mounted parts are susceptible to breakage, fully complete and undamaged Mambas are significantly more valuable than incomplete examples.

Why Collectors Love It

The Cobra Mamba is widely considered one of the crown jewels of the vintage Cobra vehicle lineup because it combines:

  • an unforgettable futuristic helicopter design

  • the exclusive Gyro-Viper pilot

  • heavy offensive firepower

  • capacity for multiple figures

  • exceptional shelf presence and play value

Nearly four decades after its release, the Cobra Mamba remains one of the most iconic and collectible aircraft in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and is often regarded as one of Hasbro’s finest vehicle designs of the 1980s.
