G.I. Joe Desert Fox 6 W.D. (1988)
Overview
The Desert Fox 6 W.D. was released in 1988 as part of the vintage G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line. This rugged six-wheel-drive desert vehicle was designed for fast reconnaissance and combat operations in harsh environments. It originally came packaged with the exclusive driver Skidmark.
Key Features
Six-Wheel-Drive Design
The Desert Fox features a distinctive 6WD configuration, giving it an aggressive and highly mobile appearance. Its design was intended for fast operations across desert terrain.
Rear-Mounted Anti-Aircraft Cannon
The vehicle is equipped with a rear-mounted rotating anti-aircraft cannon, providing defensive firepower against enemy aircraft.
Two Scorpion Missiles
The Desert Fox includes two Scorpion anti-tank missiles, mounted as part of its weapons system. These removable missiles are important when determining whether a loose vehicle is complete.
Working Steering
One of the Desert Fox's best play features is its working steering system, allowing collectors and children to position the front wheels for realistic driving and display.
Heat and Puncture-Resistant Wheels
According to the original vehicle concept, the Desert Fox featured specially designed wheels intended to withstand harsh desert conditions, including heat and punctures.
Includes Skidmark
The Desert Fox originally came with Skidmark, whose real name is Cyril Colombani. Skidmark is specifically identified as the Desert Fox driver, making him an important part of a fully complete original set.
Fun Facts
Released in 1988 and 1989
The Desert Fox was available during both 1988 and 1989, with no major variations between the releases.
European Release
The vehicle was also released in Belgium and the Netherlands. In the Dutch/Belgian version, Skidmark was renamed Slipspoor, while the vehicle itself remained essentially identical to the American release.
French Belgian Name
In French-speaking Belgium, the Desert Fox was sold under the name Scorpion.
Later Reused as the Dino-Hunter Jeep
The Desert Fox mold was reused in 1993 for the Dino-Hunter Jeep, released as part of the Dino-Hunter Mission Playset.
A Unique Vehicle Design
Unlike many vintage G.I. Joe vehicles, the Desert Fox was not simply a repaint or reuse of an earlier vehicle mold. Its six-wheel-drive design was unique within the line.
