G.I. Joe Warthog A.I.F.V. (1988)

Overview

The Warthog A.I.F.V. (Amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle) was released in 1988 as part of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line. It is a large, heavily armed armored vehicle designed for infantry transport, amphibious operations and direct battlefield combat. The Warthog came packaged with Sgt. Slaughter (v3).

Key Features

  • A.I.F.V. stands for Amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle

  • Designed for both land and water operations

  • Large armored troop carrier

  • Rear troop compartment for transporting G.I. Joe figures

  • Opening hatches and access points

  • Heavy machine-gun and grenade-launcher weapon systems

  • Multiple removable missiles

  • Rotating weapon systems

  • Distinctive large six-wheel configuration

  • Includes Sgt. Slaughter (v3) in the original U.S. release

The Warthog was released in 1988 and 1989, with no major variations between those releases.

Fun Facts

Built for amphibious warfare

The Warthog isn't simply an armored personnel carrier. Its full name, Amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle, reflects its fictional ability to operate in both water and on land.

Sgt. Slaughter's ride

The Warthog came with Sgt. Slaughter version 3, making the vehicle and figure a particularly recognizable 1988 pairing.

European release

In Belgium and the Netherlands, the Warthog was released in 1990 under product code 6032. The vehicle itself was identical to the U.S. version. Interestingly, the European packaging omitted the expanded "A.I.F.V." designation.

No shared mold

The Warthog was not a repaint of an earlier G.I. Joe vehicle. It has its own unique design and was not reused from another vehicle mold.

One of the bigger 1988 vehicles

The Warthog was part of the substantial 1988 vehicle lineup, alongside the Rolling Thunder, Phantom X-19, Skystorm and Swampmasher.

What Makes a Warthog Complete?

A desirable complete example should include:

  • Warthog A.I.F.V. main body

  • Sgt. Slaughter (v3)

  • Sgt. Slaughter's accessories

  • Original missiles

  • Missile rack

  • Machine gun

  • Grenade launcher

  • Weapon mounts

  • Hatches and doors

  • Wheels and chassis components

  • Original decals

  • Instructions / blueprints

Sgt. Slaughter is an important value factor, so I would list the vehicle separately as "complete vehicle" versus "complete with Sgt. Slaughter."

Recommended GIJoeForSale.com Price

For a 100% complete Warthog with Sgt. Slaughter in Very Good/Excellent condition, I would recommend:

€109.95–€129.95

For a very clean example with excellent decals:

€139.95–€159.95

For a complete boxed example:

€249.95–€299.95

Interestingly, GIJoeForSale.com currently lists a 1988 Warthog A.I.F.V. at €79.99, so if that is your current example, there is room to position a particularly complete or excellent-condition example higher.

Collector Appeal: 8.5/10

The Warthog A.I.F.V. is one of the standout armored vehicles of the 1988 G.I. Joe line. Its amphibious concept, large troop-carrying capacity, heavy weaponry and association with Sgt. Slaughter make it a very desirable vintage G.I. Joe vehicle.
