The Rolling Thunder was released in 1988 and is one of the largest and most heavily armed vehicles from the vintage G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line. It was designed as a massive armored assault vehicle and originally came with the exclusive driver Armadillo.

The vehicle contains two large Double Team quad-thruster rockets hidden inside its armored body. Each rocket carries six Firefly free-fall cluster bombs.

The Rolling Thunder includes a removable six-wheeled All Terrain Scout Vehicle (ATSV). This small vehicle can be deployed from the rear of the main vehicle for reconnaissance missions.

Inspired by Aliens

Rolling Thunder designer Guy Cassaday has explained that his inspiration for the vehicle came from the Marine APC in the 1986 movie Aliens.

Fully deployed, the Rolling Thunder is more than three feet long, giving it an enormous presence compared with most other 3.75-inch G.I. Joe vehicles.
