G.I. Joe Thunderclap (1989)

Overview

The Thunderclap was released in 1989 as part of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and included the exclusive Long Range driver. Designed as a long-range mobile artillery system, the Thunderclap provided the G.I. Joe Team with heavy fire support capable of striking targets far beyond the front lines. Its large six-wheeled chassis and powerful rotating cannon made it one of the most imposing ground vehicles of the late vintage era.

Key Features

1. Includes Long Range

Every original Thunderclap came with Long Range, G.I. Joe's heavy artillery specialist.

Long Range was exclusive to the Thunderclap during its original 1989 release, making complete sets especially desirable among collectors.

2. Massive Rotating Artillery Cannon

The Thunderclap's defining feature is its oversized artillery cannon, which features:

  • 360-degree rotation

  • adjustable elevation

  • long-range bombardment capability

  • heavy support fire role

It was designed to provide indirect fire support for advancing G.I. Joe forces.

3. Six-Wheel Heavy Chassis

The vehicle rides on a rugged 6×6 off-road chassis, providing excellent stability while transporting its massive artillery system across difficult terrain.

4. Dual Driver Cab

The armored cockpit offers seating for the driver and an additional crew member, reflecting the vehicle's role as a battlefield artillery platform.

5. Defensive Weapons

In addition to its main cannon, the Thunderclap includes:

  • twin machine guns

  • missile launchers

  • armored crew compartment

This allows the vehicle to defend itself while repositioning between firing locations.

Fun Facts

One of the Largest G.I. Joe Artillery Vehicles

The Thunderclap is one of the biggest self-propelled artillery vehicles released during the original A Real American Hero line, rivaling vehicles like the Persuader and Mobile Command Center in battlefield presence.

Long Range Was Vehicle Exclusive

The Long Range figure was only available with the Thunderclap in 1989, making him a key reason why complete sets are highly collectible.

Real-World Inspiration

  • Mobile Command Center

  • Rolling Thunder

Its large size and elevated cannon make it a standout vehicle in any G.I. Joe display.

Collector Favorite

Although released late in the vintage line, the Thunderclap has become one of the most respected 1989 vehicles thanks to its realistic military styling, detailed sculpting, and excellent play features.
