G.I. Joe Tiger Sting (1989)

Overview

The Tiger Sting was released in 1989 as part of Tiger Force, the G.I. Joe team's elite jungle assault unit. It is a repaint of the 1984 V.A.M.P. Mark II (itself an evolution of the original V.A.M.P.), finished in the signature yellow, black, and green Tiger Force camouflage. Unlike the original V.A.M.P. releases, the Tiger Sting did not include an action figure, although the package artwork prominently featured Tiger Force Bazooka behind the wheel.

Key Features

1. Tiger Force Exclusive

The Tiger Sting was one of the final Tiger Force vehicles released during the original A Real American Hero line and completed the team's impressive vehicle roster.

2. Based on the V.A.M.P. Mark II

The Tiger Sting retains all the play features of the V.A.M.P. Mark II, including:

  • Four-wheel-drive chassis

  • Opening hood

  • Rear cargo platform

  • Rotating missile launcher

  • Tow hook

  • Removable fuel cans

Its rugged design makes it ideal for jungle patrols, reconnaissance, and rapid assault missions.

3. Heavy Weapons Platform

Despite its compact size, the Tiger Sting carries an impressive weapons load:

  • Rotating missile launcher

  • Heavy machine gun

  • Rear equipment rack

  • Towing capability for compatible accessories

This combination allows it to serve as both a reconnaissance vehicle and a light attack platform.

4. Signature Tiger Force Camouflage

The bright yellow body with black tiger stripes and green accents makes the Tiger Sting one of the most recognizable Tiger Force vehicles ever produced.

Its bold appearance perfectly matches the rest of the Tiger Force lineup.

5. No Included Driver

Although the box artwork depicts Tiger Force Bazooka driving the vehicle, no figure was included with the Tiger Sting. Collectors commonly display it with:

  • Tiger Force Bazooka

  • Tiger Force Duke

  • Tiger Force Flint

  • Tiger Force Recondo

  • Hit & Run

Fun Facts

Captured Cobra Technology

Within the Tiger Force concept, several vehicles were captured Cobra vehicles that the G.I. Joe Team repainted and modified for its own use. The Tiger Sting represents the Tiger Force version of Cobra's off-road jeep concept.

One of the Final Tiger Force Vehicles

Released in 1989, the Tiger Sting was among the last Tiger Force vehicles produced before Hasbro shifted its focus to sub-teams such as Python Patrol, Night Force, and Slaughter's Marauders.

Excellent Display Vehicle

Its compact size and distinctive tiger-stripe paint make it an ideal companion for larger Tiger Force vehicles like the Tiger Rat and Tiger Fly.

Popular Among Variant Collectors

Because it shares the proven V.A.M.P. tooling while featuring a unique Tiger Force paint scheme, the Tiger Sting is a favorite among collectors who specialize in vintage vehicle variants.

European Release

The Tiger Sting was also released in Europe as part of the Action Force/G.I. Joe line, making it familiar to many collectors in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Value Drivers

The biggest factors affecting collector value are:

  • Complete missile launcher

  • Original missiles

  • Tow hook included

  • Both fuel cans present

  • Clean Tiger Force decals

  • No stress marks or broken roll bars

  • Original instruction sheet

  • Original box and inserts

Because the missiles, fuel cans, and tow hook are commonly missing, 100% complete Tiger Sting vehicles command a substantial premium.

Why Collectors Love It

The Tiger Sting remains one of the standout Tiger Force vehicles because it offers:

  • the reliable V.A.M.P. Mark II design

  • a distinctive Tiger Force camouflage scheme

  • excellent off-road playability

  • compatibility with a wide range of G.I. Joe figures

  • an essential piece of a complete Tiger Force collection

More than 35 years after its release, the Tiger Sting is still one of the most recognizable Tiger Force vehicles in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. Its combination of classic V.A.M.P. engineering, bold tiger-stripe styling, and limited 1989 production makes it a favorite among vintage G.I. Joe collectors.
