G.I. Joe Armadillo (1988)

Overview

The Armadillo Mini-Tank was originally released in 1985 and was repainted and reissued in 1988 as part of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. This version retained the original tooling but featured an updated green-and-tan camouflage scheme. The Armadillo is a compact light assault tank designed for reconnaissance, rapid attack, and infantry support. It was sold without an included action figure, allowing collectors to assign any G.I. Joe driver or infantry figure as its operator.

Key Features

1. Compact Mini-Tank

The Armadillo was built as a fast and agile armored vehicle, ideal for:

  • reconnaissance missions

  • rapid assault

  • convoy escort

  • base defense

Its small size allows it to operate where larger tanks cannot.

2. Quad-Barrel Turret

The vehicle's most recognizable feature is its rotating quad-barrel cannon, providing impressive firepower for such a compact vehicle.

The turret can rotate 360 degrees, allowing engagement of targets in every direction.

3. One-Person Crew

The Armadillo features an open driver's compartment designed for a single G.I. Joe figure, making it easy to crew with virtually any vintage character.

4. Durable Design

With only a few removable accessories, the Armadillo is one of the more durable vehicles in the vintage line, and complete examples are relatively easy to maintain.

5. Ideal Support Vehicle

The Armadillo works especially well alongside larger G.I. Joe vehicles, including:

  • Rolling Thunder

  • Persuader

  • Mobile Command Center

  • HAVOC

  • Crusader

Its speed makes it an excellent scouting vehicle ahead of heavier armor.

Fun Facts

Originally Released in 1985

The 1988 Armadillo is a repaint of the original 1985 Armadillo Mini-Tank, sharing the same mold but featuring a revised camouflage pattern.

Also Repainted for Slaughter's Marauders

In 1989, Hasbro released another version of the Armadillo in the distinctive Slaughter's Marauders colors, making it one of the few G.I. Joe vehicles to receive multiple vintage repaints.

Army Builder Favorite

Because it was sold without a driver, many collectors own several Armadillos to create armored reconnaissance units in their displays.

Realistic Military Inspiration

The Armadillo resembles modern light reconnaissance vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles, emphasizing speed and mobility over heavy armor.

Popular with Vintage Collectors

Despite its small size, the Armadillo is appreciated for its realistic proportions, simple engineering, and compatibility with nearly every G.I. Joe figure.

Value Drivers

The biggest factors affecting collector value are:

  • Complete quad-barrel cannon

  • Smooth rotating turret

  • Original decals in excellent condition

  • No stress marks or cracks

  • Instruction sheet included

  • Original box and inserts

Because the turret assembly is the most distinctive feature of the vehicle, complete and undamaged examples are the most desirable.

Why Collectors Love It

The Armadillo Mini-Tank remains a favorite among vintage G.I. Joe collectors because it offers:

  • a compact and realistic armored vehicle

  • the iconic rotating quad-barrel turret

  • excellent compatibility with any G.I. Joe figure

  • durable construction

  • strong display value alongside larger vehicles

More than 35 years after its re-release, the Armadillo remains one of the best small armored vehicles in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. Its practical military design, reliable play features, and multiple vintage color variants make it an excellent addition to any classic G.I. Joe collection.
