The Crusader Space Shuttle was released in 1989 as part of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. It included a repainted version of Payload (v2) and was essentially a stand-alone version of the shuttle from the 1987 Defiant Space Vehicle Launch Complex, allowing collectors to own the famous shuttle without purchasing the massive and expensive Defiant playset.

The Crusader also came with the Avenger Scout Craft, a recolored version of the reconnaissance drone from the Cobra Night Raven, giving the shuttle an additional space reconnaissance capability.
