G.I. Joe Swampmasher (1988)

Overview

The Swampmasher was released in 1988 as part of the vintage G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line. This unusual 12-wheeled vehicle was designed specifically for swamp and rough-terrain operations, giving the G.I. Joe team a dedicated vehicle for environments where conventional vehicles would struggle.

Key Features

  • 12 wheels arranged into four rotating three-wheel bogie units

  • Triad wheel assemblies can rotate to help the vehicle climb over obstacles

  • Extended high-water exhaust for driving through shallow water

  • Front-mounted laser gun

  • Two removable missiles

  • Removable roll bar

  • Four wheel mounts

  • Bright green, purple and yellow color scheme

  • Detailed exposed-engine design

  • Originally released in 1988 and 1989

No Figure Included

Although the box artwork shows Muskrat and Hardball operating the Swampmasher, neither figure was included with the vehicle. This is important when checking completeness.

Fun Facts

12 Wheels!

The Swampmasher has an unusual 12-wheel configuration, with the wheels grouped into four rotating triads. This gives it a distinctive appearance unlike almost any other G.I. Joe vehicle.

Designed for Swamps

The vehicle was specifically created for swamp warfare. Its rotating wheel units allow it to negotiate rough terrain, while the extended exhaust is designed for shallow-water operations.

One of the Most Unusual 1988 Vehicles

The Swampmasher is quite different from the traditional tanks, jeeps and aircraft in the G.I. Joe line. Its bizarre wheel arrangement and bright colors give it a very distinctive late-1980s look.

No Driver Figure

Despite the artwork showing figures using it, the Swampmasher was sold without a figure. So you don't need Muskrat or Hardball to call the vehicle complete.

Part of the 1988 Wave

The Swampmasher was part of the large 1988 vehicle lineup, alongside vehicles such as the Desert Fox, Phantom X-19, Rolling Thunder and Skystorm.
