The Cobra Battle Barge was released in 1988 as part of the vintage G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line. It is essentially a floating Cobra defensive station, designed to protect Cobra Island and detect approaching enemies. The Battle Barge features three laser-gun positions and a central radar dish.

Although the packaging shows several Cobra personnel operating the station, no action figures were included with the Battle Barge.

It was originally intended as a G.I. Joe vehicle

One interesting piece of G.I. Joe history is that the Battle Barge was reportedly originally designed in G.I. Joe colors, but was changed to Cobra colors before release. A Brazilian version retained the original Joe-style color scheme.

It actually floats

Unlike many G.I. Joe vehicles that simply look like boats, the Battle Barge was designed to float on water. This makes it an unusual addition to the vintage line.

Cobra Island defense

The Battle Barge makes particular sense as a Cobra Island defense station. Its radar and multiple gun positions allow Cobra to monitor and defend the surrounding waters.

Three gunner positions

The Battle Barge has three separate gunner stations, giving it a larger crew presence than its relatively small size might suggest.

Released again as a mail-away

The Battle Barge was later offered again through Hasbro Direct as a mail-away item in 1991. That version is known for having solid-white stickers rather than the clear-vinyl stickers used on the retail release.

Surprisingly common

The Battle Barge was produced in relatively large quantities. One source notes that the 1988 Hasbro catalog listed 36 Battle Barges per case, which helps explain why loose examples are still relatively easy to find.
