G.I. Joe H.A.V.O.C. (Heavy Articulated Vehicle Ordnance Carrier) (1986)
Overview
The H.A.V.O.C. (Heavy Articulated Vehicle Ordnance Carrier) was released in 1986 as part of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and came packaged with the exclusive Cross-Country driver figure. Combining elements of an armored personnel carrier, tank, and mobile command vehicle, the H.A.V.O.C. is one of the largest and most versatile ground vehicles ever produced for the G.I. Joe line.
Built to transport troops through hostile terrain while delivering heavy firepower, the H.A.V.O.C. remains one of the most respected vehicles among vintage collectors.
Key Features
1. Includes Cross-Country
Every original H.A.V.O.C. included Cross-Country, a Louisiana-born armored vehicle specialist and the official driver of the H.A.V.O.C.
His unique camouflage uniform and southern personality made him one of the standout vehicle drivers of the 1986 lineup.
2. Articulated Center Joint
One of the vehicle’s defining features is its pivoting articulated chassis, allowing the front and rear sections to move independently.
This design gives the H.A.V.O.C.:
-
improved maneuverability
-
better off-road capability
-
realistic steering action
-
impressive display flexibility
3. Detachable Recon Scout Vehicle
Stored inside the rear compartment is a removable one-man reconnaissance vehicle that can be deployed for scouting or quick attack missions.
This “vehicle within a vehicle” concept added significant play value and made the H.A.V.O.C. unique among G.I. Joe armored vehicles.
4. Heavy Weapons Systems
The H.A.V.O.C. is heavily armed with:
-
twin rotating cannons
-
missile launchers
-
side-mounted weapons
-
the detachable scout vehicle’s own armament
Its combination of transport capacity and firepower makes it one of the Joe Team’s most formidable ground units.
5. Large Crew Capacity
The spacious design allows multiple figures to ride:
-
driver in the front cockpit
-
crew members in the rear compartment
-
operator in the scout vehicle
It can easily serve as the centerpiece of a large battlefield convoy.
Fun Facts
One of the Largest Ground Vehicles in the Line
The H.A.V.O.C. rivals the Mauler and later vehicles in terms of physical presence and is often one of the biggest pieces in a collector’s display.
Inspired by Real Military Concepts
Its articulated design resembles modern heavy tracked carriers and over-snow transport vehicles, although the H.A.V.O.C. adds plenty of futuristic G.I. Joe flair.
The Scout Vehicle Is Frequently Lost
Many loose examples are missing the detachable reconnaissance craft, making complete vehicles significantly more valuable.
A Favorite Among Kids in the 1980s
Because it offered both a large armored carrier and a secondary vehicle in one package, the H.A.V.O.C. was considered one of the best play-value purchases of 1986.
Cross-Country Was Created for It
Unlike some drivers who later appeared with different vehicles, Cross-Country is almost inseparable from the H.A.V.O.C. and is rarely displayed elsewhere by collectors.
Value Drivers
The biggest factors affecting collector value are:
-
inclusion of the original Cross-Country figure
-
detachable scout vehicle present
-
complete missile launchers and cannons
-
intact articulated joint
-
original decals in good condition
-
instruction sheet and original box
-
minimal discoloration or broken tabs
Because the detachable scout vehicle and smaller accessories are often lost, fully complete H.A.V.O.C.s command a significant premium on the collector market.
Why Collectors Love It
The H.A.V.O.C. is considered one of the most ambitious ground vehicles in the vintage G.I. Joe line thanks to its:
-
massive size and commanding presence
-
innovative articulated steering system
-
removable reconnaissance vehicle
-
heavy weapons loadout
-
exclusive Cross-Country driver
-
outstanding play and display value
Nearly four decades after its release, the H.A.V.O.C. remains one of the crown jewels of the 1986 G.I. Joe collection and is widely regarded as one of Hasbro’s finest vehicle designs from the golden era of A Real American Hero.
