G.I. Joe Cobra Buzz Boar (1987)

Overview

The Cobra Buzz Boar was released in 1987 as part of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. Unlike conventional tanks or transports, the Buzz Boar is a one-man tunneling assault vehicle built to burrow through the ground and launch surprise attacks from below. Its enormous rotating digging wheel and futuristic appearance made it one of the most imaginative—and divisive—vehicles in the vintage G.I. Joe line.

Although it was sold without an included action figure, it is commonly paired with Techno-Vipers or Cobra Engineers in collector displays.

Key Features

1. Giant Rotating Digging Wheel

The Buzz Boar’s signature feature is its massive front-mounted drilling wheel, equipped with oversized hardened cutting teeth designed to tunnel through soil and obstacles.

According to its official file card, the machine weighs approximately 1.8 tons and is capable of underground assault operations.

2. Single-Pilot Armored Cockpit

The vehicle features a sealed cockpit with a forward-hinged access door displaying the Cobra emblem.

The enclosed cabin protects the operator while navigating underground or hostile environments.

3. Twin Machine Guns

Mounted on the side turret are dual .50-caliber repeating machine guns, providing defensive and offensive firepower once the Buzz Boar surfaces.

4. Destro Anti-Obstacle (DAO) Missiles

The Buzz Boar carries two DAO (Destro Anti-Obstacle) short-range missiles, intended to destroy barriers or enemy fortifications encountered during tunneling operations.

5. Compact Assault Vehicle

Despite its unusual design, the Buzz Boar is relatively small and works well in dioramas as a specialized engineering or surprise attack vehicle.

Fun Facts

One of the Weirdest Cobra Vehicles Ever Made

The Buzz Boar is frequently cited as one of the most unconventional vehicles in the entire G.I. Joe line. Some fans love its originality, while others see it as a sign of the franchise's move toward more science-fiction-inspired designs in the late 1980s.

Frequently Compared to General Grievous' Wheel Bike

Modern collectors often point out that the Buzz Boar resembles the wheel bike later used by General Grievous in Star Wars, despite predating it by many years.

The Cobra Emblem Is Commonly Missing

The removable Cobra insignia attached to the cockpit door is one of the easiest parts to lose, making complete examples harder to find. Collectors also report that finding a matching pair of original missiles can be challenging.

Became a Cult Favorite

Although not universally loved when it debuted, the Buzz Boar has gained a loyal following among vintage collectors who appreciate its bold design and unique concept.

Represents Cobra’s Experimental Engineering

The Buzz Boar perfectly reflects Cobra’s willingness to field unconventional technology, using underground infiltration instead of traditional armored assaults.

Value Drivers

The factors with the greatest impact on collector value are:

  • original Cobra door emblem included

  • both DAO missiles present

  • intact digging wheel with no broken teeth

  • clean, original decals

  • instruction sheet included

  • original packaging in good condition

Because the removable emblem and missiles are frequently lost, fully complete Buzz Boars often sell for substantially more than incomplete examples.

Why Collectors Love It

The Cobra Buzz Boar has become a cult classic because it offers:

  • one of the most original vehicle concepts in the G.I. Joe line

  • a memorable giant tunneling wheel design

  • specialized underground assault capabilities

  • strong display appeal alongside Techno-Vipers and Cobra Engineers

  • increasing rarity when found complete

While it may not have the realism of the H.I.S.S. Tank or Maggot, the Buzz Boar stands out as one of Cobra’s most imaginative creations and remains a distinctive centerpiece in many vintage G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero collections.
