G.I. Joe Triple T (Triple Tank) (1986)

Overview

The Triple T (Triple Tank) was released in 1986 as part of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and came packaged with the exclusive Sgt. Slaughter action figure. Designed as a compact but heavily armored assault vehicle, the Triple T combines three independent tracked sections into a single highly maneuverable tank capable of traversing rough terrain.

The vehicle was developed to showcase the popular wrestling personality Sgt. Slaughter, making it one of the most recognizable releases of the 1986 lineup.

Key Features

1. Includes Sgt. Slaughter

Every original Triple T came with Sgt. Slaughter, the legendary drill instructor and one of the most iconic characters in G.I. Joe history.

The 1986 version was exclusive to the Triple T and is highly sought after by collectors.

2. Triple Track System

The vehicle’s defining feature is its three independently mounted tracked units, consisting of:

  • one front track assembly

  • two rear track assemblies

This unusual configuration allows the Triple T to pivot and navigate uneven terrain more effectively than a conventional tank.

3. Rotating Main Cannon

Mounted on top is a large rotating cannon turret that can swivel to engage targets from multiple angles, giving the vehicle significant offensive capability.

4. Compact Assault Tank

Unlike larger vehicles such as the Mauler or H.A.V.O.C., the Triple T is designed as a fast, maneuverable support tank, ideal for reconnaissance and rapid-response missions.

5. Single-Operator Cockpit

The cockpit accommodates one standard 3.75-inch G.I. Joe figure, with Sgt. Slaughter serving as its canonical commander and driver.

Fun Facts

Created Around Sgt. Slaughter

The Triple T was specifically designed to accompany Sgt. Slaughter, reflecting Hasbro’s licensing agreement with the famous professional wrestler.

As a result, the character and vehicle are almost always associated with one another.

One of the Most Unusual Tank Designs in G.I. Joe

The three-track layout has no direct real-world counterpart, making the Triple T one of the most imaginative armored vehicles ever produced in the line.

A Cartoon Favorite

The Triple T appeared multiple times in the animated series, where Sgt. Slaughter often piloted it into battle against Cobra forces.

Its television appearances helped cement its popularity among children in the 1980s.

Sgt. Slaughter Boosted Sales

Because Sgt. Slaughter was a major celebrity during the mid-1980s, many children purchased the Triple T specifically to obtain his exclusive figure.

Compact but Highly Playable

Collectors frequently praise the Triple T for delivering satisfying play features without requiring as much display space as larger tanks.

Value Drivers

The biggest factors influencing collector value are:

  • inclusion of the original Sgt. Slaughter figure

  • intact triple-track assemblies

  • working rotating cannon

  • complete accessories and missiles

  • original decals in good condition

  • instruction sheet included

  • original box with minimal wear

Because many Sgt. Slaughter figures became separated from their vehicles over the years, complete Triple T sets command significantly higher prices than vehicle-only examples.

Why Collectors Love It

The Triple T remains one of the standout armored vehicles of the vintage G.I. Joe line because it offers:

  • a unique three-track tank design

  • the exclusive and highly collectible Sgt. Slaughter figure

  • excellent maneuverability and play value

  • memorable appearances in the animated series

  • strong nostalgic appeal for 1980s fans

Nearly 40 years after its release, the Triple T continues to be a centerpiece in many vintage G.I. Joe collections and is celebrated as one of the most creative and character-driven vehicle releases from A Real American Hero.
